Brittany oysters, iodized varieties

getaway in Brittany inevitably rhymes with tasting seafood. Suitable for farming oysters and mussels, our region is dotted with bouchots and parks. From the north to the south of Brittany, there are different varieties of oysters, each as tasty as the next. There are 12 Breton grands crus, produced from Cancale to the Gulf of Morbihan.

We melt for hollow oysters such as the Pleine Mer from the bay of Quiberon, a particularly iodized oyster. That of Paimpol is fleshy and has a strong taste. As for Penerfine, raised in the south of Brittany, it is characterized by its firmness and its fleshy side.

In addition to cupped oysters, you can also find delicious flat oysters with a sweet nutty taste. Among them, the Belon is one of the most delicate oysters in Brittany. Raised in the north of the region, it evolves in a mixture of fresh water and sea water.

The other variety of oysters is Horse's Foot (larger than flat oysters), subtle and slightly bitter.

On the port of Cancale, an oyster market unique in France welcomes shellfish lovers for a tasting facing the sea.

                  Discovery of Breton oyster farming

In the north of Brittany, the Marine Farm invites us to discover the history of Cancale de Bretagne oysters. During the visit, we discover the oyster company, its workshops as well as a superb exhibition of shellfish from around the world. We understand why these oysters are so famous for their rich food (plankton): they are raised in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, the zone with the largest tidal range in Europe (amplitude between the low and high tide zone) .
