Getaway to Léhon
After visiting the city of dinan, head for Léhon, one of the towns of character in Britain ! Finding it is easy. Some will take the car or the bicycle, we are launching an assault on the towpath for a 30-minute walk in the middle of nature between Léhon Dinan.
Follow the small towpath
No need to be a great sportsman to join the city of Léhon on foot : it is only 2 km south of Dinan. To stretch your legs and enjoy an oxygenating outing, the towpath offers a nice little hike.
Over the rancid, we contemplate the landscapes, we discover a fauna and a flora that we had never seen...
First stopover at thelock that we can see in the distance: if we have a crush on these small buildings, they remind us that there is a path of the locks which we absolutely have to do.
But for today, we continue on our way, on the right bank of the canal. That's it, we see the small town, as well as the famous ruins of castle of lehon which dominate the rocky promontory! Not a minute to lose, we warm up the calves and we begin the ascent of the city.
- The nature walk along the canal
- the lock
- The possibility of coming by bike
Stroll through the city of Léhon
At the foot of the city, the charm works in a few minutes. We had already seen Léhon in photos, and it is true that the small town fully deserves its status as “Small City of Character” ! We are lucky, because in March, Léhon can be visited in absolute calm (you may see it for yourself, but in summer, the city attracts many travelers).
Nothing to add ! Houses with old-world charm, cobbled streets and magnificent landscapes... A real Sunday just the way we like it! While strolling through the small narrow streets, we meet a lover of the place who tells us that the city was founded between the 15th and 16th centuries! Suffice it to say that we are retracing the traces of our past.
Before parting, our guide advises us to go and see the old bridge of Léhon which, too, would have many stories to tell us… First a wooden bridge, then rebuilt in stone with 4 arches to support the weight of the goods, it then ends up being built again in a single large central arch, to allow barges and the Rance to circulate better!
📍 What to see and do in the city of Léhon:- Stroll, dream and admire
- See the small bridge
- Chat with the locals (the best guides!)
Visit Saint-Magloire Abbey
Continuing our journey, we head towards the majestic Saint-Magloire Abbey, former Benedictine monastery from the XNUMXth century which borders the Rance. The visit is free, then, without hesitation, we push the doors of the monument! But before we start, who is Saint Magloire ?
→ You can book your guided tour of the Abbaye de Léhon here!
For the visit to have more meaning, you should know that Saint-Magloire was a Breton Saint, whose body would have been stolen by monks and then brought here, in the heart of the abbey.
Inside, head towardsabbey church ! A word of advice, take the time to dwell on the smallest details. For example, the nave is full of little treasures to contemplate, starting with its richly decorated ceiling and its 8 recumbents (classified as historical monuments!). History lovers, we are amazed by the reliquary and the statue of Saint-Magloire, Pouche's work which dates from 1998.
We then continue with the monks' refectory, the cloister and to end with walk in the gardens : Luckily, there is even an exhibition! Next time we'll come for the guided tour of the Abbey of Saint-Magloire.
- Open to the public all year round and possibility of taking part in guided tours adapted to the youngest
- The abbey church dates from the 13th century, the cloister and convent buildings from the 17th century, the monks' refectory from the 13th, 14th then 18th century, the attic from the 17th century...
- Opportunity to see temporary exhibitions in the garden
Climb to the top of the Château de Léhon
We go back to theold castle, and we can say that it is going up! The more we climb in its direction, the more the landscapes take shape…
Why was the castle built on a rocky promontory? Another gentleman tells us that the monument served to protect the Rance Valley ! Besieged by the King Henry II of England in 1168 then razed in 1169, the monument was rebuilt by Pierre Mauclerc… And it is these vestiges that we can observe today.
For a nice souvenir photo, the panorama over the town of Léhon is breathtaking. A perfect spot for reading, sit down, take the time to chat… And try out new photography techniques.
📌 What to see and what to know about the Château de Léhon:- Free all year
- The magnificent view from the rocky outcrop – even more beautiful at sunset!
- Some of the materials from the castle were used to rebuild the Abbey!
Our idea for a boat trip from Dinan
For a walk with family or friends, the Jaman V is a good idea for a nature outing! On board a cruise ship, it's a commented walk of about 1 hour which starts at the port of dinan, passing in front of theSaint-Magloire Abbey and then returns to Dinan. To offer or have fun, this trip on the water is to be done absolutely during your stay in Dinan !
