Stopover in Dinan-Cap Fréhel!
🗓️ Drop the moorings! November 6, 2022 marks the official start of the famous transatlantic race: La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe!
📍 Meet at Pointe de l'Isle and Pointe de la Corbière in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo in Brittany to encourage your favorite skipper (because we all have one 🤭) and take a closer look at the boats sail offshore. 👀
But before starting the festivities (because Brittany always knows how to receive well 😉), here is a recap of what awaits you!
A new edition that has the wind in its sails
This year, 138 solo sailors from more than 20 different countries will compete to try to win THE first place 🥇! A record of participations which testifies to the enthusiasm aroused by this international event.
And for good reason: The Route du Rhum is the biggest single-handed transatlantic race in the WORLD! 🥳
🌊 The goal? Join Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe, departing from Saint-Malo (in the North-West of France, for southerners 😜). A total distance of 3542 miles, or 6 kilometers!
And we can say that the challenge is daunting! In 2018, winner Francis Joyon crossed the ocean in just 7 days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 47 seconds! The class. 😎 The skippers are more than ever determined to break this record!
Boats galore!
Want to be in the front row? Meet at the starting line to see the entire fleet up close ⛵! And good news: even the biggest boats will be there! An announcement that made our hearts capsize (and we know that this is also your case 😌).
SPOILER ALERT 2022: Each category of sailboats will parade from the first week of opening of the Saint-Malo entertainment village! It's time to admire these powerful ships and greet the skippers to give them strength before the big departure!
Which boats to observe?
- The Imocas : 60-foot monohulls competing in the Vendée Globe, the biggest solo sailing race around the world (37 participants)
- The Class40s : 12,18 meter monohulls (55 skippers)
- Ultim 32/33 : the premier category of maxi-multihulls over 100 feet (8 competitors)
- The Ocean Fifty : 50-foot multihulls, i.e. 15 meters (8 sailboats)
- Multi Rums : multihulls less than or equal to 64 feet but not falling into the previous classes
- Mono Rums : monohulls greater than or equal to 39 feet but not falling into the previous classes
The beautiful info 💙
The race makes no distinction on the experimentation of the participants: the most seasoned sailors as well as the young sailors have every chance! 🙌
On the waves and in the front row please!

What is the Route du Rhum?
The Route du Rhum is the largest solo transatlantic sailing race in the world. Created in 1978 by Michel Etevenon, it is organized every four years between Saint-Malo in Brittany and Guadeloupe.
Why is the Route du Rhum so called?
In 1975, Bernard Hass, secretary general of the West Indies Rum Sugar Producers Union, was looking for an effective way to promote his alcohol. It was his meeting with the advertiser Michel Etevenon that gave birth, three years later, to the first race of the Route du Rhum.
How long has the Route du Rhum existed?
The Route du Rhum project was launched in the mid-1970s. The first transatlantic race was formalized in 1978.
How long does the Route du Rhum last?
The Route du Rhum lasts 41 days, from October 25 to December 4, 2022, the date marking the closing of the finish line for competitors.
As for the navigation time, it depends on the class of the skippers' boats and ranges on average from 7 days for the fastest to 30 days for the last skippers to have crossed the finish line.
Which route will the skippers follow?
The final course of the competitors will be determined by the strength of the wind and according to the state of the sea. The final times of the race are communicated subject to weather conditions and organizational instructions.
What does the winner of the Route du Rhum win?
The prize for the winner of the Route du Rhum varies each year. It depends on the class to which the sailboat belongs and its success bonuses.
